Testbed for Fast-Deployable Flying WiFi Network

چکیده
EPFL’s Information Processing Group (IPG) and Laboratory for Intelligent Systems (LIS), in conjunction with SenseFly (a LIS spin-off) recently started a project aimed at developing a testbed to experiment with self-organized wireless networks carried by autonomous unmanned aircrafts. The idea is to use drones developed by SenseFly to carry the infrastructure of a self-organized WiFi network for easy and rapid deployment. The network can be used to connect people on the ground (e.g. rescue people in case of catastrophe) and/or to send back to a data center the information collected by sensors. The sensors might also be carried by some of the drones. The drones have a high degree of autonomy. In particular, they are capable of carrying out a missions and land without human intervention. In this talk we present the state of this ongoing project that involves many challenges, including resource management, mobility management, self-organization, and scalability. All these challenges exist for the wireless network as well as for the network of drones. We focus on the former.

Augmenting Mobile 3G Using WiFi: Measurement, System Design, and Implementation
We investigate if WiFi access can be used to augment 3G capacity. To understand the feasibility of 3G augmentation, we conduct a detailed study of 3G and WiFi access from moving vehicles, in three different cities. We find that the average 3G and WiFi availability across the testbeds is 87% and 11%, respectively. We also find that, unlike stationary environments, WiFi throughput is lower than 3...
متن کاملAnalysis of Addax-Sinopec Outdoor Pathloss Behavior for WiFi and WiMAX Infrastructure
In wireless environments, improper handover among mobile terminals can occur during micromobility due to various reasons. Once this takes place, the network Quality of Service (QoS) experiences degradation thereby increasing the call drop rate, creating latency problems and decreasing throughput. In such scenario, there is an urgent need to optimize network performance while utilizing network r...
متن کاملThe w-iLab.t Testbed
In this paper, the W-iLab.t wireless testbed is presented. The testbed consists of nearly 200 sensor nodes and an equal amount of WiFi nodes, which are installed across three floors of an office building. The testbed supports wireless sensor experiments, WiFi based mesh and ad hoc experiments, and mixed sensor/WiFi experiments. It is explained how changes in the environment of the sensor nodes ...
متن کاملNetwork coding for unicast in a WiFi hotspot: Promises, challenges, and testbed implementation
In offices and residential buildings, WiFi networks have become a primary means for providing Internet access to wireless devices whose dominant traffic pattern is unicast. In the meantime, the emergence of network coding has brought about great promises for multicast in communication networks where intermediate nodes are allowed to process independent incoming information flows. Little is know...

This paper presents and evaluates a configurable and inexpensive MIMO mesh network platform based on IEEE 802.11n and open source software for research purposes. The requirements on such a research testbed are twofold. On the one hand a highly configurable solution is desirable where the researcher is able to make modifications on each layer of the hardand software solution. On the other hand t...
